Dark Hollow revisited |
Somewhere in my head, I just assumed
Dark Hollow was a traditional tune. I've heard it played countless times by so many Bluegrass bands that I guess I got dyslexic somewhere along the line. So when the
Joan Baez - GD / Dark Hollow post came up a couple of days ago, I looked up the lyrics source. Joan brings tremendous
vocal power to the Dark Hollow piece performed in the clip.
According to this source, Dark Hollow was played by the Grateful Dead in acoustic sets in 1970 and again in 1980, with a couple of electric performances in 1971. The versions differ a little.
Lyrics: Bill Browning
Music: Bill Browning
Music lovers will tell you that Bluegrass music has always been famous for its strong vocals and tight harmonies. Here's a great YouTube clip of Dark Hollow. It captures some very famous youthful Hippies in the moment. These are players who were incredibly talented. They were caught up inside the conservative Bluegrass music culture at this time. Circa
Old and In The Way. They were pioneers of Newgrass music.
These guys are undoubtedly pretty damned stoned for this Dark Hollow performance on Feb 13, 1973. They pull a Bob / Jerry / Donna vocal vapor-lock moment, and somebody blows the lyrics at 3:12. Right after that, watch for one guy biting his lip, and another guy holding back a shit-eatin' grin.

Re: Dark Hollow revisited |
Hey Monte! Here is a Dark Hollow from one of the shows I attended a couple months ago by The David Nelson Band. This was a fun show, basically a tour party while they were vacationing. Bluegrass musicians Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum sat in on this opening set. The entire show lasted for five-and-half hours!

Re: Dark Hollow revisited |
Clarence Ashley-Dark Holler (October 23, 1929)I was born in old Virginia
South Carolina I did go
There I courted a pretty little women
But her age I did not know
Well her hair was brown and curly
And her cheeks was rosy red
On her breasts she wore white lilies
For the tears that I have shed
When I'm asleep I'm dreaming about you
When I wake I have no rest
Ever moment seems like an hour
All the pain rolls through my breast
I'd rather be in some dark hollow
Where the sun don't ever shine
Than for you to be some other man's darling
When you ain't no longer minePapa says I must not marry
Papa says it'll never do
But little girl if you are willing
I will run away with you
For I'd rather be in some dark hollow
Where the sun don't ever shine
Than for you to be some other man's darling
When you ain't no longer mine
When I'm asleep I'm dreaming about you
When I wake I have no rest
Every moment seems like an hour
All the pain rolls through my breast

Re: Dark Hollow revisited |
hey Monte,
I'm having a hell of time trying to find info on this anywhere on line, but I recall from my bluegrass-soaked youth that this was one of those 'controversial' songs that various people took credit for at various times.
For some weird reason, Bill Browning seems to be the only one that has survived into cyberspace, but it almost certainly was originally a traditional song that several different people recorded, with minor changes, and copyrighted as their own (a la the Carter Family and the dozens of songs they 'claimed' and copyrighted as originals).
For example, on 'Bear's Choice' (and on David Bromberg's 1970's recording) it is credited to Browning, but on Reckoning - 9 years later - it is listed as "Traditional."
I do not believe that this was a 'Zeppelin I' case of them now knowing or caring who actually wrote what; I expect it more likely that someone became aware of the various claims of authorship, and so understood they could get away with not crediting or paying anyone.
Great post, though. One of the all-time great songs, no question.

after Bill Keith's banjo break, the boys return to singing the 2-part harmony, at 3:01...
